Hello from Dartmoor and the Baskervilles

Hi all. Thanks to all you hi-tech geeks who got us a new blog. Best thing since sliced bread. And thanks to Robert for constantly tickling our brain cells.

As Kelly says, I was a busy bee in the Ukraine and Georgia. I'll be brief here, as I am on my hosts computer in Devon. Three hours from London on the train and glorious sunshine, great friends and too much food and booze. Back to the former Soviets. I had told Boss Ted I can no longer do two nights on the trot - so I did FIVE!!! Saw little of Kiev, but Tbilisi (get the atlas) was lovely and backward (no parking signs anywhere) warm people and fresh food. We flew there in a charter DC9 over the Caucasus mountains (half as high as Everestand snow clad) and our piulot dipped this way and that for a scary view - great.

Gotta go now, you have Kelly's picture - that was a great day. After Kelly I wandered up to Notting Hill for no great reason, walked into the first pub and a voice said ' My God, Hugh O'Keefe!' (He was right on both counts) He was an old classmate of Julina McMahon. Petit monde, indeed.

Can't post pictures, but will bore you with them when I get back. Much love, Hugh

The Blog Reborn

Hi! Everyone thought I should take some time off from searching cyberspace to share with you, here on the recently patched and painted (courtesy of COK, lets hear three hearty cheers. HIP HIP) blog, some of my recently acquired wisdoms. Whew even I need to read that sentence (if you could call it that) twice. Wisdom #1: When Bloging, whatever you do don’t delete, you get no second chance. I am mortified that it was I who lost all your words and pictures. Thank god I’m not your investment advisor. Should the ongoing search of cyberspace fail we can draw some recompense in the knowledge that Margaret O’Keefe, AKA “mum” is in possession of edited hard copies of all previous blogs with the exception of some of Robert’s more libelous ones which can still be found in drive D/My Documents of his vulnerably shared computer. Should anyone be in need of any of this material please don’t hesitate to contact me and for a small administration and handling charge it can be made available in thirty days or less guaranteed money back if not bla..bla….
Enough of this dwelling on past failures, lets look at how good is the present and how great will be the future and if we had to find one word for all this good and great what would it be? Would it start with an A? No! Would it start with a B? B….B..Bunnings that’s it. You win. You stand here at the start of the golden mile. The grey clouds part the sun lights you…
Whew lucky for you guys I was distracted there and now re reading today I get a glimpse of how dangerous that Bunnings induction stuff was. Who knows what the long range consequences could be. The most interesting thing was that of the forty two inductees at least thirty were still at school, Bunnings is the new Macdonalds with hammers instead of hamburgers and French windows instead of fries. I’m doing a four day thirty eight hour week so far and have survived seven ten hour shifts on the concrete without taking a single afternoon, let alone morning nap . Admittedly I slept with my boots on the first night out of fear that I would never get them back on to feet that would surely be swollen to double size by the next day.
To add to the excitement of new work there have been celebrations of landmark occasions on the family front. Anne’s Fiftieth, AKA Ann’s Wet Fiftieth, relocated at the eleventh hour to the local church hall, put me in mind of events past at the Goolmangar hall except that we could drink as much as we liked inside, even the ladies. I was a bit disappointed that Catt did not throw together at least a little one act play given the available stage, though in the absence of Hugh to accompany on the also available piano I shall forgive her. (forgiveness I may rescind if she doesn’t soon blog a more comprehensive critique of the event in full) If Anne could just duplicate the miracle of the rains I’m sure she could have repeat performances of her 50th throughout western NSW and the catchments forever and never grow a day older.
The following weekend saw Gabby and Adrian attain their majorities at a well attended and delightfully run event at the Brookvale Hotel. Guests felt safe under the benevolent gaze of our own personal Sudanese security guard who found favor in the hearts of many of the ladies and, I suspect, a number of the gentlemen. The wine flowed freely not only in the metaphorical sense and Manly went down to the Broncos(?) making as little impact on the levity of the occasion as the rain had the previous weekend’s revelries. Gabby was gorgeous and Adrian was, well big, especially when he donned his boxer style dressing gown gift. I who require very little encouragement when it comes to cavorting in the ambient atmosphere of an ale house, enjoyed myself immensely and that enjoyment was only enhanced by the Bendy Bus Roller Coaster trip back to town.
Is it just me or does anyone else think that Phil Koperberg (bushfires commander in chief) looks more like a Thai Admiral every time you see him. With all that bling he better not fall down, he’d need a crane to pick him up. And another thing, when is this Government going to take a little more interest in fire bugs who, on a head count of life and property, are the equals if not the betters of any terrorists. Bring on the war on firebugs I say.
Now I’m going to attempt to post a few snaps without any serious crashing so wish me luck.

Hugh and Kelly in London

Hi everyone

I'm so glad the blog is back in action! Just in time for me to post a photo of Hugh and I at the Anchor pub on the weekend!

We had a lovely lunch, soaking up the sunshine (and a few bottles of wine) in the beer garden on the Thames. It was such a thrill to have another O'Keefe in London and I wish you all could have been there too!

Enjoy the photo and keep on blogging! Love Kel

Okeefe Blog Version 2

Hello Bloggers

As an interim measure I have created another blog version with the name okeefesandco2, in case the original can be recovered, we can revert to it. The login and pasword are the same as for the previous blog.

Since we last reported we have travelled from Mission Beach to Kinka Beach, near Yepoon on the coast from Rockhampton. We spent some time in Townsville (with high speed broadband woo hoo). Then onto Alva Beach near Ayr, where we caught up with SOK again on his way to Cairns. SOK is well and looking forward to new adventures in a new town, with more to offer than he has had in the last 14 months at Airlie. I am sure we will see a blog from him soon.

After a week at Alva we went to Bowen, 4 nights and Midge point, 2 nights. We arrived here yesterday after spending a night in a freebee at Clairview on the way.

We have had a lot of wind over the last 2 weeks which keeps the sand flies away, but it has stopped now so they are back and so are the bites. It is the only negative I have about Queensland beaches.

We were almost flooded out at Mission Beach after 2 days and nights of non stop rain, with over 100 mm on us and 190mm at Kennedy/Ingham nearby. The Bruce Hwy was cut by landsides and flooding for a couple of days. But we were able to see the Tully Gumboot Festival as it is meant to be, in the rain. We also went to the Ayr "Water Festival" which did not rain but it is good seeing the locals enjoy themselves with street parades, competitions, beauty pageants, carnival rides etc. We also visited Wallaman Falls at 287 meters the highest single drop falls in Australia, they were spectacular after the rain, and we were lucky to see them so clearly as they are often enveloped in FNQ cloud. We went to a little town called Paluma in the hills west of the Bruce Hwy between Ingham and Townsville. At 860 meters above sea level it is like a miniature Katoomba in a tropical rainforest and popular in the summer for Townsville people to cool off. Attached photos of the falls and the flooded road near Ingham that took us one and a half hours to travel 6klm due to the use of one lane only for a flooded section of road.

I hear it is in the 30s in Sydney today which seems odd in that we have a range of about 15 to 24 here at the moment, and I saw London was not much lower than us.

that's all to report for now, Please email the new blog address to those who need it that I have missed, but hopefully someone may be able to find the old one in cyberspace, we cannot have lost all that wisdom and entertainment in Robert's reports.

Love, Sue Chris & Olly
